When strong winds blow through, healthy trees usually bend and sway without issue. But if a tree is weakened or unstable, those same gusts can push it past the point of recovery, leading to dangerous falls. A toppled tree can damage property, block roads, or cause injury—so identifying risks before a storm hits is crucial. Some warning signs of instability can be subtle, while others are more obvious. Recognizing them early allows you to take preventive action and call an arborist before disaster strikes. At The Tree Guy, our local arborists can identify hazardous trees and remove them as needed. Here are four warning signs that a tree may be at heightened risk of toppling in high winds. Significantly Leaning A noticeable lean—especially if it has recently developed—is one of the clearest signs of instability. While some trees grow naturally at an angle, a sudden shift or worsening tilt may indicate that the root system has been compromised. This can happen due to root rot, soil erosion, or ground saturation after heavy rain. Leaning trees are far more likely to be uprooted during strong winds. Root Problems/Soil Movement The root system anchors the tree and provides critical stability. When roots are damaged, diseased, or decayed, the entire tree becomes vulnerable. Fungus growing at the base, cracked or lifting soil, or visibly exposed roots can all indicate underlying issues. Soil that appears raised on one side of the trunk is a serious sign that the tree is shifting and could soon fall. Cracks or Cavities in the Trunk A tree’s trunk must bear the weight of its canopy and resist wind forces. Deep cracks, hollow areas, or cavities weaken the trunk and increase the likelihood of breakage under stress. Decay around these areas signals structural compromise. If a large section of the trunk is damaged, the tree may no longer be able to support itself during a storm. Close Proximity to Recent Construction Trees near recent excavation, grading, or trenching are at higher risk because their roots may have been disturbed. Damaged roots can lose their grip on the soil, making trees more prone to falling in windy conditions.
