4 Interesting Facts about Palm Trees

The Tree Guy • September 3, 2022

In Southern California, palm trees are as central to the landscape as beaches and freeways. Interestingly, in California, there’s actually only one native species of palm tree: the California fan palm. However, in the greater Los Angeles area, the most common type of palm is the Mexican fan palm, which can grow to over 100 feet. If you have a palm tree on your property that requires maintenance or removal, you’ll want to entrust the work to an experienced arborist. At The Tree Guy, our local arborists are highly experienced with palm tree trimming, skinning, and removal in the greater Ventura, CA area. Here are four facts about palm trees.

Palms & The 1932 L.A. Olympics

It’s widely believed that preparations for the 1932 Olympics led to palm trees becoming ubiquitous in the Los Angeles metro area. As part of a Great Depression work project, around 400 workers were employed to plant palm trees. By the time their work was done, about 40,000 Mexican fan palms were planted along area roads.

Biblical Palms

Palm Sunday occurs a week before Easter. On this day, many Christians carry palm fronds as part of a symbolic custom. This ritual began because the Bible describes how people laid palm branches along Jesus’ path during the return to Jerusalem.

Your Palm May Need a Shower

Of course, palms need to suck up water from the base to stay alive and healthy. However, it’s less known that, during long stretches of no rain, palms should be given a shower. This can knock away insects like mealybugs and mites, as well as dust. Also, many palm species will enjoy the added humidity.

Trimming Palms Is Dangerous Work

When someone trims palm fronds from below, the fronds can get caught up in the tree. Then, suddenly, the weight can shift and trigger a sort of avalanche that is incredibly heavy and may fall on and seriously injure—or even suffocate—the person doing the trimming. The L.A. County Fire Department responds to at least six deadly palm tree trimming accidents each year. This makes it very important that the work is done by an experienced professional.
