Don’t Ignore these General Warning Signs of Tree Disease

When trees become diseased, it can weaken them and create safety risks. While different diseases affect trees in different ways, there are some general warning signs that often signal a problem. Recognizing these symptoms early gives you the best chance to save the tree or determine whether removal is necessary. At The Tree Guy, our local arborists are experts at identifying diseased trees and then determining the best course of action. Here are four general signs that a tree may be suffering from disease.
Unusual Leaf Discoloration
Leaves are often the first part of a tree to show signs of trouble. If you notice leaves turning colors outside of their normal seasonal cycle, such as yellowing or browning during spring or summer, it may be a warning sign of disease. Discoloration can indicate that the tree’s vascular system is under stress, preventing proper nutrient flow.
Thinning Canopy

A full, lush canopy is a good sign of health. When a tree begins to lose leaves prematurely or produces noticeably fewer leaves than in previous years, it could be struggling. Thinning foliage often reflects an internal issue that prevents the tree from supporting normal growth. If the canopy looks sparse compared to nearby trees of the same type, it’s worth taking a closer look.
Cracked/Peeling Bark

The bark acts as a protective barrier for a tree. When it begins to crack, peel, or develop sunken areas, the tree may be battling disease beneath the surface. Damaged bark can make the tree more vulnerable to further stress, and it may indicate that the underlying tissues are weakening.
Dead/Dying Branches

Isolated branches that die off while the rest of the tree seems healthy are often a red flag. When multiple branches begin to wither, it’s a strong indication that the tree’s overall health is compromised. Dead branches not only point to disease but also create safety risks, as they can break and fall unexpectedly.
